Histopathological Finding of the Dog Infected with Dirofilaria immitis

Abstract
A histopathological finding of an eight year old female dog, weighing 29.5 kg and having 1, 800 microfilariae of Dirofilaria immitis per cc. of peripheral blood was observed. The dog was infected with eight adult filariae in the ventricle and auricular appendage of the heart. The findings are summarized as follows.
1) Aorta: The sections of aorta showed elevation of intima representing arteriosclerosis and mild degree of distortion of media, and a few areas of impaction of microfilariae in the small branches of vasa vasorum which showed moderate degree of thickening.
2) Heart: The sections of heart showed mild degree of hypertrophy of myocardial fibres of the ventricles and appendages, and the epicardial site of the right auricular appendage was covered by the fibrinous exudate. In the appendeceal myocardium there was a focal area of acute inflammatory process which was composed of cellular necrosis, degeneration, and infiltration of inflammatory cells, and also in the appendage there were mural thrombi which containing a number of microfilariae of Dirofilaria immitis. The coronary arteries contained a number of microfilariae also.
3) Lungs :The sections of lungs showed marked degree of pulmonary edema, areas of hemorrhage, and partial atelectasis. The bronchial epithelium was mostly desquamated. A number of bronchioles were dilated, containing some degree of inflammatory cell infiltration. Many white areas of inflammatory process around the bronchioles were seen. The alveolar septi were widened, and capillaries were dilated and congested containing numerous microfilariae. The alveolar spaces in the acute inflammatory lesion were airless containing exudates and acute inflammatory cell infiltration. The pulmonary arteries contained thrombi, some of which had numerous microfilariae, and also the pulmonary arteries showed the areas of elevation of intima. Another finding was metastatic lesions of osteogenic sarcoma in the pulmonary parenchyma which formed varying sized isolated lesions.
4) Liver: The sections from liver showed mild degree of necrotic process around the central veins; and minimal degree of widening of sinusoids. In the hepatic vessels, there were clumps of icrofilariae but not in the sinusoids. Another finding was also metastatic lesions of osteogenic sarcoma in the hepatic parenchyma
5) Spleen : The sections from spleen represented no significant finding except the presence of fibrolipoma.
6) Skin: In the section of the skin, there were a few hyaline thrombi in the vessels, some of which contained microfilariae. There was also the metastatic lesion of osteogenic sarcoma.
